Word spread like wildfire around the Candidate barracks - though no one was entirely sure where the word had originated, word spread nonetheless. Tonight was the night.

Ever since the skyhunter attack that had claimed the life of the previous Candidatemaster, Ansgar and Ansk had made a nightly habit of patrolling just outside the barracks. The copper and her handler would spend the entire night pacing the long rows of wooden buildings, watching the perimeter for any signs of a second attack. And though their eyes would be turned outwards, scanning the skies for shadows, it would nonetheless be very difficult for Candidates on a top secret mission to sneak past them unnoticed.

Tonight, however, Ansgar and Ansk were otherwise occupied - a rare opportunity. They were away on another assignment with the Whercaptain’s pack. There was still a guard posted, but an unbonded and lackadaisical one. Already he was nodding off at his post, unaccustomed to the nocturnal schedule. The Candidates would still need to be very quiet, or risk waking the guard… but if they kept their voices down, and if they were careful, it wouldn’t be impossible. Or they could make a run for it, which would almost certainly attract attention, but with a good head start they could vanish into the night before the guard was even on his feet.

It would be boys versus girls, whether by unspoken agreement or by active design, and tonight the boys would have a head start. Across from the Candidate Barracks, separated by only a strip of cobbled path, was the massive oiled-canvas tent that housed Discovery’s makeshift Hatching Sands.

And inside… Hilayleth and her clutch. Whatever remained of her clutch, at least. She had permitted no one inside to look at them - not even her bronze mate, whispered the rumors. Kesereth left food outside, Hilayleth took it inside, and no one saw the eggs.

Iraven was alight with adrenaline, not sleepy at all despite the late hour. The whole thing had started with a dare, and now it was boys versus girls. The prospect of seeing the clutch, the danger, the competition...it was all delicious.

"I think he's nodding off!" He hissed to the rest of the group. They were gathered around in the common room, waiting. Iraven had sent Thorn, his grey flitt, to hide on the roof of the barracks and keep an eye on the guard. The grey blended in well with the deepening night sky.

"Should we run?" he asked, looking around at the other candidates. Of course he wanted to jump right into things.

He was either anxious or vitalized. Either way his nerves were all abuzz and his head was spinning with all kinds of thoughts. Daemon was going to do this on his own at the start and then... someone must have had the same idea because the rest of the barracks exploded with hushed whispers. Then there was a dare. The Healer thought it immediately, absolutely ridiculous and very very childish. But... with the competitiveness that hung in the air.... Well lets just say that Daemon's pride wouldn't allow a loss under his belt. So instead of calling them all faranth damned children he'd grin all mischievously and tell them 'Game. On'. So much for being an adult Daemon you hypocrite.

So right now he felt like he was sixteen all over again, sneaking around Healer Hall with his chosen lover, like the hormonal teenager he was. His heart pounded in his chest even before they even decided to keep watch, and thank Faranth their Candidatemaster was otherwise occupied, or this may have not have even been possible.

He instructed his green, Vani, to stay put. Her intentions would be noble and good, but honestly Daemon wasn't convinced she wouldn't botch the entire thing. Daemon was just behind the youngest of their little devious group, waiting for the word. When Iraven hissed something finally, Daemon peeked around to double check before pulling back and considering the best way to go about this.

A hand went to the boy's shoulder in case he had an itchy trigger finger. "No, no. No running, he may be an idiot but i'm sure he's not deaf. But we need to move quickly and quietly. Meaning lift your feet and stay low." he'd whisper in return, light eyes looking to the others in the group. "We all need to agree on something or else this will fail, and the girls will not let us live this down." Poke the proverbial bear in a way, some of them were definitely here because there was now a challenge.

Renvio, like Daemon, was one of the ones who had been making plans about how to sneak into the hatching grounds to check out the eggs before the word had gotten around and the completion between the male and female candidates had started up.

He'd made sure to leash Isbale to his cot so she wouldn't try to follow him, and stuffed Mori as full of food as the baby brown could take. Hopefully the firelizard would be sleeping it off for a long while yet. As much as Ren loved the little flit, he didn't trust him not to go bouncing off to say hi to the queen and mess this whole thing up.

Now, normally Ren was the sort who would go racing straight into things without a thought. But he was well aware that today needed a measure of patience if they were to sneak past the man on watch without waking him up. Not waking anyone up was important. The queen might well eat them if they disturbed her too much, or worse, if the candidate master caught them, they might get banned from standing for this clutch. Never let it be said that Renvio had his priorities straight.

"He is asleep though" Renvio pointed out "So we can probably afford a bit of noise, just not too much. Try not to shout if you stumble" They did not need someone stumbling and crying out in fear or pain and getting the whole lot of them caught.

Iraven glanced at the hand on his shoulder, a faint smirk on his face at Daemon's words. All right, maybe he was being a little overeager. After all, they wouldn't be able to see the clutch if they never even made it out of the barracks. He nodded at Renvio's reminder that this was a competition.

"Okay." He let out a breath, his heart pounding. "Let's go?" He waited a moment for the reactions of his two companions, and seeing that they seemed ready to move, he cracked the door open the rest of the way and slipped out into the night.

It was now or never. Iraven started in the direction of the barracks, hoping that his feet wouldn't fail him now. He sent a firm mental command to Thorn to stay put, and let them know if the guard began to stir.
