the mating flight of green firelizard astrid
npcs welcome!

Sunset was a good time to be on the wing. Clouds of warm air billowed upwards from the sun-baked beaches of the peninsula that jutted out into the lake, only just beginning to cool after an afternoon spent sizzling in the summer heat. The lake lapped tenderly at rocks and sand, sending playful breezes to rustle the trees and tease those with the misfortune to be born without wings. Draped atop the wooden hut in which her bonded lived, the green firelizard Astrid shifted in sleep. Her pine-green wings were stretched wide to catch the yellow star's dying rays, dark hide radiating welcome warmth as shadows began to gather about the Weyr. As the light faded, she roused, raising her elegant head to peer about at a blood-red sky framing a sun which hung low over the water. Faceted eyes deepened to violet; the green of her skin was intense. Astrid rose, bunched her muscles in a crouch—then she leaped.

Leathery wings stretching three feet across scooped chunks from the humid evening air, thrusting her body forward and up as she sought a better altitude from which to view the Weyr complex. Banking into a column of heat rising from the sand nearer to the beach, she stretched her wings wide and rode it higher before swooping around to begin a path which would take her over the many different structures and clearings. Astrid sent her thoughts out, seeking. The mental call fanned out like an opening fern, spreading tendrils wide and beckoning, demanding immediate and passionate response. To this she added a repeating series of whistling calls, marking her progress as she glided around the Weyr seeking those who would respond to her needs. She was here, a temptation and a challenge who refused to be ignored. Let the males flock to her call and compete for her favour—if none could impress her suitably she would be most displeased.

Ice had been sleeping when the wave hit him, when he heard Astrid's mental call for suitors. He bellowed out a call in return. He whistled to his human before taking off towards her. He was sure that there would be more chasers, but he would let the green know that he was the best. No matter what other colors chased her, or how many other males there would be there he would win.

The sunset was always a nice time, and a flight just made it even more enjoyable for Ice. This would be his first flight on the island, and he planned on making the most of it. He caught a rising heat column and soared higher and higher towards her. He cooed towards her, hoping that it would help him win points since he was the first to give chase.

Zanaris was just laying himself in bed, worn and weary from the day that had occurred. Oh it hadn't been anything spectacular, but it had been tiring to deal with the raucous group of Candidates once more. And then he had had his chores, and had tried to maintain the records as a harper the best that he could. There was an abundance of Harpers of late, and it had seemed to earn him less smiles and far more groans. Those others thought that Harpers were less useful than other crafts, and perhaps they were right - at least in Zanaris's case. Even so, he had worked long and hard today, and had earned his rest.

Hero, however, was not tired. He had slept while Zanaris had attended his lesson, slept while he had done his chores, and napped happily while he had worked on his craft. Hero rather appreciated the less stressful days, where no one in particular was causing problems for his beloved pet. He sat atop the roof and watched as the sky turned colors, the sun setting behind the sea. Even as he watched the beauty of the day shifting into night, something else called his attention.

A beautiful lady was making her call, a pretty green with dark and bright colorings, was sending an invitation to the males of the Weyr. Hero let out a trill of excitement and passion as he launched himself into the air, pumping his wings hard to catch up to the exotic lady that was calling them. He did not perform any tricks, no it was too soon for all that, all he needed to do right now was to inform the beauteous creature that he was going to partake, that he would chase her until the sky ran out, that he wanted to claim her as his own if only she would allow him. Hero crooned to her, watching her and ignoring the other males that were joining them in the skies. To him, there was only Astrid and he.
