Chores were fun, lessons were fun, but nothing was more fun to Lyl than getting to spend time with her beloved Mister! Fortunately, this was part of her craft! Candidates were usually given time to work on their crafts, or sometimes even given chores focused around their crafts, and with so many beastcrafters it made it easy to get in some time at the Beastcraft Hall, the only Hall on the Green Star! Everything about the fact that they were first pleased Lylarina to the core! And it was even better that she was one of the few people who had managed to tame a strider of her own!

Oh sure, he was not so big and useful as a wher or a dragon, which most people around here seemed to have. But he was certainly the next best thing! And half of the Weyr's strider population belonged to just one person, the Master Beastcrafter Wenn. Lyl hoped that she could grow up to be like him someday, to have gained so much knowledge and patience that she could manage a whole flock of striders! Unless she bonded to a dragon, of course! Then she would probably not have as much time for the striders, and she would be lucky to just have Mister.

Mister lived with the other striders most of the time, in a pen near the Beastcraft Hall. He was not the kind of pet that could live in the Candidate Barracks with her, the way some people had firelizards, canines, felines, or those new rivercats she hadn't had a chance to see in the wild yet. He was too big for that, and not sentient the way that whers and dragons were, so just letting him roam and wander was not particularly appealing to the rest of the weyrfolk. So she was a good girl and kept him in the pens while she saw to her other duties.

But the moment Mister caught a glimpse of her on the way, he immediately moved straight to the gate and called loudly to her. She giggled and ran the rest of the way there, "Hey there Mister!" she said happily as she climbed on the gate - hoping that no one yelled at her for it again this time. "I brought you your favorite!" she said, holding out a large chunk of white cheese, which Mister gobbled right up, careful not to gobble up her fingers as well. Then he rubbed his beak into her hand, nearly pushing her off the fence. "Easy boy!" she said, pushing him back gently to calm him down. "I think we need to get you ready for a ride! Get some of this energy out of you!"

Wenn sighed as he had his young flit curled around his shoulders, he knew that Messenger was a handful but add onto that he had four Striders. His days were no longer slow, at least not like they had been on Pern here he was the head of the Beast Crafthall and that left very little time to be able to do much other than his craft and work with those who were gaining Striders. He loved his girls and working with the four of them was always a joy especially when they behaved themselves which wasn't always. Messenger sat up and grabbed his ear with a small chirp, she didn't care to sit up like others she preferred to balance and use his ear as added balance. "Messenger!" He growled at her, Messenger didn't even so much as cheep in apology she'd heard something.

As he approached his four girls came running towards him together, Blue leading the pack Charlie and Delta on either side with Echo bringing up the rear. He smiled to himself as he saw his girls running in formation it was always a sight but one he'd not trade for anything in the world. Carefully he opened the gate and held out a small piece of meat to Blue first knowing she had to have her share first or she'd do something to the others. He then handed Charlie hers, he turned to Delta who rubbed her beak against his shoulder handing her, her piece of meat. Finally he walked around the other three and gave Echo her share, that was when he heard the yell of another person talking to their pet.

As he glanced over he saw the girl nearly get knocked off the fence by her Strider, he started towards her with his four girls behind him. Messenger perched on his shoulder holding his ear, she was still small enough this bother him in the least. "If your going to come see him why don't you do so on the ground? Being up there makes it easier and more likely you'll lose you balance." Wenn called to her as he went closer, Blue had her head over his shoulder looking at the male Strider with some interest. Mostly because he was one of the few males here, Wenn looked Mister over to see how he was doing and to make sure the Journeywoman knew what she was doing with her Strider. He looked healthy enough and seemed well cared for, that was a good sign and he seemed to like the one who worked with him.

She rubbed at Mister's beak, gently, but noticed a larger pack of striders moving in the distance. That could really only mean one person, Master Wenn was the only one to have such a large group of striders to his name. Lyl knew that some of the other beastcrafters tread carefully around Wenn, not wanting to get in trouble or fall out of favor with the Master Beastcrafter of the Green Star. But she really didn't mind, he was a nice enough person, and how would you ever share intellectual discussions if you cowered in fear at his very name?

"If your going to come see him why don't you do so on the ground? Being up there makes it easier and more likely you'll lose you balance."

She smiled and turned to the Master, leaning on Mister's nuzzling beak for support, but being sure to hook her heels on the post beneath her. "Well, because he's so tall!" she said with a laugh. Even short striders were taller than she was, and Mister was large enough for a male, though not as large as the female that was looking around Master Wenn at him. "I like to look him in the eyes whenever I get the chance, to show dominance as well as devotion," she said simply. If she was constantly beneath him, well, it was something that caused many other striders to get a big head about them, constantly looking down at those who had tamed them. Fortunately for her, Mister rather approved of her most of the time!

Even so, she threw her feet back over to the outside of the pen and allowed herself to slide down. Mister remained directly behind her, but he was now looking to Master Wenn, as well as to the four females that followed. Blue might be dominant, but Mister wasn't picky, all females were worth his attention. Though perhaps not as much worth his attention as Lyl was. He stretched his long neck over the fence and nuzzled the back of her head with his beack, before pausing to continue his gaze at Wenn and the females.

Lyl smiled, reaching up to stroke his face behind her without looking, "Your girls are looking well," she said. However, she also knew better than to get Mister out with Blue so near. He was a male, and therefore not the leader of their pack, but he had that brightly colored beak that concerned her whenever Blue was near. She had heard tales, and even witnessed, as Blue demonstrated her dominance over others. She wasn't afraid, but she was certainly smart enough to not test the female's temperament on any given day.

Master Wenn knew his business with creatures of all kinds and he was learning first hand what firelizards could do if they were wanting to be troublesome. He inwardly smiled to himself as he looked at her, she was one of the few who weren't treating him like he was some kind of a person bent on making them walk a fine line. Wenn didn't care how he was treated as long as they weren't down right completely direspectful but he was a human being. He was a beastcrafter first and foremost, Master Crafter second.

He did smile when he saw the way she hooked her heels, "Yes they are tall, just like runnerbeasts on Pern. But they are much more lethal than Runnerbeasts." He chuckled softly at the thought of a Runnerbeast with teeth and claws. "That is a good idea, looking them in the eyes it reminds them of who is really in charge in your relationship. I know if I didn't do that to Blue every once in a while she'd probably try to tear me apart." Wenn knew the relationship with his girls were tricky at the best and worst, he sighed as he watched the young woman.

Delta broke off from the group and approached Mister, she wasn't yet fully grown. She was sure that she was going to spend some time with this other Strider. Echo watched being sure that Delta was safe because Blue was busy with what she was doing, Charlie walked behind Delta carefully. Blue watched Mister as she looked at the male that was there nuzzling his human, Wenn smiled gently at Blue as she nuzzled his shoulder.

"Thank you. Your male seems well cared for." He said softly as he looked at her, "I was planning on taking my girls for a ride, want to join me?" Wenn asked as he looked at her and turned to make sure Blue was behaving as she kept her eyes locked on Mister. Messenger chirped at Lyl trying to bring attention to the fact a flit was now among his flock.

Lylarina nodded when he noted that they were much more lethal than the runnerbeasts on Pern. It was a very simplistic statement, really, and one that was often told to the newer beastcrafters that arrived on the Green Star. First thing that made this a reality was the obvious fact that striders were carnivorous where runners were herbivores. Being carnivores, they had ways to attack and kill, rather than to simply defend. Oh sure, a runner back on Pern might kick someone in the head if they were unlucky enough, or might roll over on someone too slow to jump off if they weren't trained to behave properly at all times. But Striders? Striders could tear you apart with their beaks, the claws on their wings, or the talons on their powerful leg which could be used to tear at things as well. Mister was a creature made to kill, not simply graze and pass by the time.

She did smile when the Master Beastcrafter said that it was a good idea to look Mister in the eyes to reaffirm her own dominance over him. It was one of the many tricks she had learned long ago when training the more easily tamed creatures back on Pern, but it served an important purpose with striders. Show them you're the boss, and they won't tear you apart. She nodded to his statement, even he had to look Blue in the eyes. Blue was the dominant female, and the most dangerous of the pack in Discovery Weyr, it was fitting that she was tamed by the Master himself. Even so, Lyl was glad she had Mister, and not the broody flock of females that needed far more coddling to make it in the Weyr. Oh the females would be important for breeding future striders, but Blue...Blue's offspring would not be the ones they were offering to the important people without a beast to ride. They would likely be as demanding and dominant as she was. It was likely that Delta or Echo would be the best suited breeders from Wenn's flock, and Mister had always been a prime subject to stud out, for he had been easy enough to tame and train. This wasn't to say that he was perfect, however, as he was still quite fiercely protective of her. Of course, this could be a benefit, if the young of the future were imprinted on their riders from hatching, and then the riders would not only have a mount in time, but a guardian.

Mister watched as Delta approached, interested by her movements. He was not often allowed near the females, as unattended breedings in the strider pens were less than ideal. The flock of females seemed nervous, or perhaps like they were going to pounce, the way that one was moving forward and others were circling back. Mister scuttled just a hint closer to Lyl, standing a bit taller to protect her. Of course, there was still a fence between them that would keep him back from lashing out at the girls if they made too sudden of movements around Lyl. Lylarina made it a point to giggle at their antics and ease Mister's mind.

She nodded, "Mister's easy to care for. And perhaps I give him too many scraps," she said simply. Cheese was his favorite, but he also liked the various ways that the cooks spiced the meat around here. He still preferred raw meat for a full meal, but he was inquisitive and adventurous and liked the new things that Lyl constantly introduced him to. He had even taken a small liking to tubers, though to very little other vegetables.

When Wenn asked if she was interested in going for a ride, Lyl beamed back at him, "I would love to go for a Ride! And it's important to get the energy out of the striders, especially when they're penned up so often," she said with a knowing nod. Already she seemed to have more energy himself. She turned her eyes to the flit on his shoulder when the little thing chirped, but Lyl had seen many fire lizards in her life, there were quite a few on Pern. She supposed she wouldn't mind one one day, but she also didn't want to have the cliche of being a beastcrafter with so many random beasts! For now, Mister was enough!

Delta took a few more steps closer then clicked her beak at Mister trying to get his attention, she then made an attempt to nudge him. She wanted to play, she was wanting to get him to join her in playing tag or some variant of it anyway. Echo was the guardian of Delta as the younger strider tried to engage Mister in play, she knew that this was important but she also knew that Blue wouldn't permit this male to do anything to harm the flock. Blue nudged Wenn again trying to get him to pet her, he turned slightly so he could stroke her head gently he only gave in to demands rarely and only when he truly felt like it.

Wenn nodded he knew that a diversity in their diet wasn't all bad after all his girls were often given treats other than meat but only when he felt they'd earned them. Though Blue rarely took them the other three readily snapped up the food that was given to them as long as meals were still raw meat. "You may want to be careful with the scraps or you may make him fat." Wenn said with an amused grin, it wasn't often that he let emotions show so easily but he was in his element. He was The Master a thought he'd never have attained this rank in all his turns as a Beast Crafter.

Her reaction was exactly why he'd asked, "Then let's get their gear and then we'll go for a ride." He said as he nudged Blue. She knew what that meant she squawked at Charlie to keep an eye on the other two while she went with Wenn. Charlie chirped or something close to it in return, Wenn smiled he knew that his girls were communicating with one another and it was fine by him. "Once they're saddled we can let them out of the pens." He told her as he climbed over the fence he jumped to the ground from the top of the fence, so he wouldn't be pushed by Blue.

Delta nudged Mister, which he didn't exactly know what to make of. The female was young, and outside of the pen that held him in, and then there was another female making her way to him. Beaks were clicking and nudging at him through the fence posts, and all he wanted to do was protect his beloved Lyl from the striders that were closing in around her. He gave a confused chirp, then kicked a foot in distress before curling his head around Lyl's shoulder, nuzzling at her. He wasn't sure what to make of the females closing in around them, but he would feel much better if he were able to properly protect his Lylarina. He also looked to Blue, the dominant female of the whole flock of Discovery Weyr. She would know how to handle the situation, but she would also be the biggest threat to Lyl, so he needed to keep a close eye on her to be sure she didn't get too temperamental around his beloved.

If it had been anyone other than the Master Beastmaster himself giving her advice on how to handle her own strider...well, Lyl might have gotten a bit irritated at the notion of anyone telling her how to do her own craft. Or how to manage her own animal, for that matter. But she realized he was just giving her the known tidbits of warnings that any senior apprentice would have heard several times over. Proper care for animals was basic knowledge for any beastcrafter, and proper diet distribution was key to the animal's health. But this was the Master, and he was just telling what was the simplest statement that he could to offer assistance. So she simply nodded to the statement that she needed to be careful to not make her strider fat with scraps.

She noticed that her strider was getting a bit agitated from the attention he was gaining from the females. She put a hand on the spot where his beak melded into soft downy brown fuzz, and rubbed him softly, easing some of his tension. Mister calmed right down with that, enjoying the feeling that Lyl's hand was gently ruffling his feathers and sometimes just softly rubbing his beak.

She smiled brightly when he then suggested that they get their gear. She wondered for a moment as to which strider he would ride, but supposed it would be Blue. Even so, she only had the one, so she wasn't forced with such a difficult decision. She practically bounced as she ran to get her gear, Mister calm from her touches. It was easy enough to saddle a strider, much the same as it was to saddle a runner. And when there was a saddle that was commonly used for only that animal, it was easier. The girth strap was quick to fasten to the proper length, the stirrups easily falling to the placement that she preferred. The breast strap easily rounded Mister's front, though there was not the same need for the cinch fro breast strap to girdle, as Striders only had two legs. There were no bridles for striders, as they had beaks and could not close their mouths around a bit the way a runner could. Even so, halters were just as adequate, and the toe ring was a proper place to clip a set of reins for the rider to use.

Mister was quite well behaved while Lylarina readied him for their ride. She gently smoothed out his feathers before placing the saddle on him, to be sure that none were bent or broken from the weight, and she double checked all of the straps to be sure they were in place and well maintained. He had no reason to have his feet checked, as there were no rocks that could cling to his talons the way they nestled into the grooves of runner hooves, but out of habit Lyl looked at them anyway, Mister shifting to stand on a single leg for a moment as she checked for anything. His feet looked as normal as ever, but there was a definite trust in the way Mister allowed her to handle him.

Once settled, she grabbed at the horn and put one foot in the stirrup and hoisted herself on top of him, throwing her other leg over his back and finding the other stirrup with her toe. He clicked at her as she took hold of the reins, and moved slowly to be sure she had her balance. She beamed at the Master, "Where would you like to ride?" She asked eagerly, her youth showing a bit as she was enthralled by the adventure that was about to unfold. Every ride on Mister was an adventure, an opportunity afforded to her only on the Green Star, something she could have never experienced back home. Back home, well trained riders became soldiers, and that simply was not in Lyl's nature.
