The Green Star - originally intended as a refuge from Thread, now a refuge from war, as all of Pern battles for the last scraps of ore that can be dragged from the earth. Can the riders of Discovery Weyr build anew? Or does this new world harbor its own dangers?

The dining hall was such a terrible place to eat. Jeride couldn't imagine why such a place existed, this big open area specifically for total strangers to sit down and eat their meals in the same place as other total strangers. People were always walking in and out, it was impossible to keep an eye on the entire thing at once. It also got really fucking crowded during midday.

The only good thing about places like that was that crowds of people eating their lunches tended to keep a really bad watch on their belongings, but since Jeride had sworn (mostly) off picking pockets in an effort to integrate into the Weyr community, this no longer held any particular draw for him. It definitely didn't mean he wanted to eat his own meals there.

Which was why he'd taken to eating in a shaded corner of the main complex, near enough to the kitchens for easy food transport but far enough to evade the lunchtime crowds. Jeride settled under the shade of some spreading alien tree he didn't know the name of, emptying his pockets of the various food items he'd snagged. He had a lump of goat cheese, some sort of fruit thing with a thick rind, several greasy sausages wrapped messily in a napkin, and a couple large rolls stuffed with what he hoped was dried fruit. All in all a pretty good haul, if he did say so himself.

Taking a bite of cheese, Jeride set it back down on top of the worn jacket which was currently serving as a picnic blanket and began to pick the rind from the fruit thing. He still wasn't sure what these green fruits were supposed to be called, but he'd eaten a few of them over the past couple of sevendays and he'd grown to like their tart flavour. Parting a chunk of rind from the fruit's flesh, he tossed it behind him, then tore off another piece and sent it to join its sibling. He relaxed slightly, listening to the vague murmur of people going about their business in other parts of the Weyr.

Yeah. This was definitely better than eating in the dining hall.
